Following the completion and successful close out of the NFM 2 Malaria Grant, the Global Fund for ATM has approved a three-year continuation for the Malaria Grant in Nigeria for the period 2021 – 2023 (NFM 3). The Grant is being implemented through a consortium that is led by Catholic Relief Services and has as members of the Consortium – The Malaria Consortium, Management Sciences for Health and Society for Family Health. ACOMIN has been re-engaged on this grant (NFM 3) to continue with the implementation of the Community-Led Monitoring components at the community and state levels, which was previously referred to as the Accountability and Advocacy Project during the last phase (NFM 2). The aim is to pursue an increase in the quality of services, generate real-time objective information and assess the quality-of-service delivery, reduce wastage and loss of interventions and advocate for increased resource allocation for malaria intervention. Organization for Social Programmes and Health Care (OSPHC) is one of the CBOs implementing this project in Oke-Ero LGA of Kwara State. For this project, OSPHC is focusing on the following;

Global Fund New Funding Model Active Case Finding for Tuberculosis:

The active case finding is one of the strategic approaches employed in the Global Fund New Funding Model (NFM) for increasing Tuberculosis case detection. • Support CTWs to carry out home visits for each smear-positive TB case to identify and evaluate contacts and collect sputum samples from those presumed to have TB.
  • Mobilize/leverage on resources to support the TB programs at the community and LGA levels.
  • Support nutrition of TB positive patients with food stuffs and also offer nutrition education.

Establishment of Girl Up Clubs in Secondary Schools

One of the core objectives of OSPHC is to promote moral and ethical values in teenage girls through educational institutions. This we hope to achieve through the establishment of girls’ club, we call the ‘Girl-Up’ club in secondary schools. The Girl Up club is a preventative as well as intervention education program designed to empower young girls to cultivate positive body image, increase self-esteem, deconstruct gender stereotypes, express themselves, be inspired to further their education and prevent unwanted pregnancies, establish healthy relationships with other girls and the opposite sex, and be leaders of change in their communities and the nation at large.

 Through the clubs, OSPHC aims to create strategies to mentor and support young high school girls to stay in school, stand up for their rights, be healthy, gain economic independence and bring an end to child marriage and gender-based violence.

Women Empowerment (Household Economic Strengthening and Livelihood Program)

Women entrepreneurs play a key role in economic activity. However, their growth has remained significantly subdued due to various challenges faced by women entrepreneurs especially those into Micro and Small Scale Enterprises. The problem of many micro and small businesses in Nigeria has been traced by different researchers to lack of funding or inability of the owners to access credit facilities from the formal loan providers.

Finance has been the most crucial and difficult challenge for the smooth functioning, innovation, expansion and development of most of these establishments. Most of these women are illiterates and cannot complete paper work required for conventional loans and also lack collateral, steady employment or a verifiable credit history. Against this drawback, OSPHC started running an empowerment program called Household Economic Strengthening and Livelihood program that targets married or unmarried women but with children and are small scale entrepreneurs. We basically give these women micro loans to boost their businesses and improve their living conditions. They pay back this loan in bits weekly and collects the loan again after repaying the previous on collected. We also have sessions with them monthly where we talk about health, financial management, domestic violence and family life generally.

What we hope to achieve from this program;

  • Mobilize the women to save more and develop the ability to nurture a culture of commitment and self-reliance.
  • Visible improvement in the children’s education and health of the household.
  • Positive effect on household expenditure.
  • Promote gender equity.
  • Possibility of expanding their businesses or starting new and better businesses.
